The Bodies Of Swatches

Creating swatches is an integral part of the knitting process when working towards a final piece. Their main functionality is testing gauge, colour palettes, and techniques. Many times with imperfections and unexpected results, these squares are left as a collective body. Not on display and oftentimes discarded. This mini draping series aims to give theses swatches new life in 3D form. Advantageously using knits stretch and malleabale qualities on 1/4 scale. Explore the difference between the original swatch and draped swatch by pulling the pin. The form on the right was inspired by the words: Encrusted, Opacity and Transparency. Mainly utilising laddering, lace, and drop stitch techniques.

I, Lily Vernon acknowledge and pay my respects to the Woi wurrung and Boon wurrung language groups of the eastern Kulin Nation, where I conduct my studies and professional buisness. I respect their Ancestors, Elders of past, present, and future. Additionally I acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples hold knowledge about textile practices and art techniques, which has been practiced for thousands of generations. On land which was stolen and still remains unceded.
